A change of Heart

Can't see the wood for the trees

Wood you be Leaf It

Scene 1

We are at a school on culture day. There are a number of students from the Asian community dressed up in traditional outfits and they are enjoying themselves. However, there is a group of friends lead by Sofia who have mixed views about the Asian culture. The irony is that Sofia is Asian herself but has rejected the culture due to her having been adopted into a british family and she has anger as a result of abandenment issues.

We see her look at her 'dressed up in Indian culture' peers and looks over at them in disdain. This initial scene will be to a backdrop of music.

We see Sofia go back to her group of friends

Teacher

Welcome all key stage 2 to our culture day. We are very please to give you a day when you can fully appreciate the wonderful contribution our multi cultural society in Milton Keynes brings to us all.
We want you to enjoy the day, but be good and let the celebration begin.

We see Michelle go over and turn music on on the laptop and then a number of students get up and dance to Naatu Naatu.

Sofia

They really get on my nerves

Anne

Who do?

Sofia replies with sarcasm, and does the finger quotes

Sofia

My Indian friends over there in there traditional outfits

Bhramha

That's a bit unfair isn't it?

Sofia

No, not at all. Who do they think they are dancing around like bad ballerina's

Tony

So true. LOL

Anne talks loudly

Anne

I don't understand. Sofia, you're Indian yourself. Why are you dissing you're own.

Sofia

Don't talk so loud they'll hear you

Anne

Hear your prejudice you mean?

Sofia

Oh Anne. I don't expect you to understand.

Bhramha

Sofia can I have a quick word?

They go to another room

Scene 2

Sofia

Bhramha what's up?

Bhramha

What's going on? Why are you being so nasty to those girls?

Sofia

It's no reason

Bhramha

Sofia. Don't hide it from me. You know you can confide in me.

Sofia

I'm annoyed

Bhramha

That's what I thought. Is it because of you biological parents? Angry that you feel you've been abondoned?

Sofia get's visibly upset

Sofia

How dare you?
You know nothing about how I felt all these years.

She storms out of the room

Scene 3

We hear the bell go and everyone walk out and say goodbye.

Anne

See you Sofia.

Sofia

Yes, see you tomorrow Anne

Sofia puts on her headphones

Anne

Oh and don't forget to watch where you're going

Sofia doesn't hear and we see Anne throw her arms up suggesting 'no use'

We then see Sofia walking along looking at her phone with a set of headphones on (maybe we'll hear music) We show that time has gone by and she realises she's lost and worse still her phone has died.
She takes off the headphones

Sofia

Wow. I got so carried away I didn't realise I've been taken the wrong route.

We see her in film again and again looking for a way out. Then, after about an hour, she spots a gang of Asian kids walking towards her.
She looks horrified and decideds to go and hide behind a tree

Vishnu

Who's that over there?

Anagha

It's a girl

Shanti

Where's she gone?

They carry on walking until they get to the spot where they saw her. Michelle is looking around when he spots her

Michelle

Hi. Are you ok.

Sofia

Yes. Yes I am.

Shanti

Are you sure?

Sofia

Yes.

Vishnu

Are you sure? You do seem lost

Sofia nods

Anagha

Why didn't you say?

Vishnu

Anagha, wouldn't you be scared if you were on your own in the woods and you saw a gang of kids coming towards you?

Anagha

Yeah sure.

Shanti

We know this route really well. We can show you the way out.

Vishnu

Only if you want our help.

Sofia

Yes please.

We see them walk off to music and we see them beginning to get on really well, laugh together until they're out of the woods.

Sofia

Guys. Thank you so much. I know my way from here

Michelle takes Vishnu and Anagha aside

Michelle

Guys I really like Sofia. Why don't we arrange something?

Vishnu

Me too

Anagha turns to Sofia

Anagha

Would you like to hang out with us tomorrow?

Sofia

I wouldn't just like that, I'd love that.
