Scene 1: The exam (need a classroom feel - there is one that can be used in Bouverie house) Seb, Ella and examiner needed

There are two friends, Sophie and Jonah, who have been inseparable for years and the best of friends.
Sophie is talented but Jonah is much cleverer academically. One day they have an exam and Sophie is sat behind Jonah and he becomes aware that she’s copying him. She’s whispering

Sophie

Jonah, Jonah move your head a bit I can't see

Jonah

Shut up Sophie. We'll get disqualified

Examiner

Errrm, Could you be quiet over there please?

After the exam... 

Jonah

Sophie you're out of order. You could have got us both kicked out and disqualified from the exam altogether. What were you thinking?

Sophie

Jonah I'm not very good academically. You know that, and as a friend you should want to help me

Jonah

I do want to help you but what you did today was cheating

Scene 2: Results day this can be done outside, only seb and Ella needed. Props - we need a results sheet and a pencil.

Everything settles down between them until a few weeks later. It's results day and we have Jonah holding onto and looking at his results sheet when Sophie comes running in very excitedly

Sophie

Jonah. I can't believe it I got 97% in my maths. That's amazing. What did you get?

Jonah is clearly not happy

Jonah

Don't worry about it.

Sophie

Jonah. Tell me.

He replies very aggressively

Jonah

I said don't worry about it!

Sophie

You're angry at me aren't you?

Jonah

Well what do you expect. You cheated after all didn't you?

there's a pause. Sophie stares at Jonah while he looks away and can't bare to look at her. Finally she speaks.

Sophie

Jonah. What result did you get?

Jonah

For the last time I said don't worry about it!

This time Sophie gets angry

Sophie

Jonah for goodness sake. Tell me already.

Jonah still says nothing. Sophie snatches the paper off of Jonah. Takes a good look.

Sophie

I see now why you're angry.

Jonah

I worked so hard for that and you managed to beat me by cheating.

Sophie cracks a joke, which has some truth, but it doesn't go down well with Jonah

Sophie

Well I must at least know something that you don't

Jonah

That's not funny Sophie. In fact you're just rubbing salt into the wound.

Sophie

I'm just trying to look on the bright side of things

Jonah

Bright side? Bright side? You know what Sophie? Just leave me alone. Don't bother calling me or coming round.

He throws down a pencil in anger and storms off

Sophie

Jonah. Jonah. Please.

Scene 3: Bedroom’s Just Seb and his mum's voice. - Props - phone - pillow? - Switch controller

We have a scene where Jonah is in his bedroom. His phone goes and we see Sophie's name come up and he declines the call.

Then on another day he's in his room and him mum shouts out...

Jonahs Mum

Jonah, there's Sophie at the front door. She wants to see you.

Jonah

Tell her I'm not interested

Jonahs Mum

But Jonah

Jonah

Mum I'm not interested.

The phone goes again and again he declines. We could have this repeating a number of times.

 

Scene 4: New term We need extra cast but no dialogue is needed

Time passes, they break for the summer and when they get back to their new school they see each other often but won’t talk and they often give each other dirty looks as they walk with their new friends. We will film a number scenarios when this happens. Each time they are wearing different clothes to denote different days. We do this to the backdrop of music.

Scene 5: Staff room we can use one of the meeting rooms. We need James, Scott and Seb

One day Jonah is walking past the staff room when he hears his name mentioned and he stops to listen.

Sophies Teacher Mr White

It's a shame about Jonah

Headteacher

Why? What's happened?

Sophies Teacher Mr White

Well, he's so good at maths and he should be in top group because his marks are way above everyone else in group 2 but he missed out by one percent only.

Headteacher

Oh no. I can't believe that! I expected better from Jonah

We see Jonah break his pencil in half from the anger. The teachers notice the noise and look outside of the room and you can tell on their faces that they realise that Jonah heard exactly what they said but they choose to say nothing.

 

Scene 6: Jonah friends empathy film outside, we need theo, seb and Oscar?

Jonah's with his new friends when one of them says:

Thomas

Jonah what's up you're not being yourself today?

Jonah

No I'm fine

Sam

Jonah you're not fine but please, you can talk to us about...

Jonah

I'm fine really. Are you guys going to the cinema tonight?

Thomas

That's a quick way of changing the subject. You're probably not ready to talk to us about stuff like that.

Sam

Ok Jonah, we do understand. We'll be here for you whenever you're ready.

Jonah's embarrased but appreciates his friends empathy. Bell goes off and they go to their next lesson

 

Scene 7: Sophie gets in touch Ella & seb needed, can film anywhere.

One day, Sophie get’s in touch by text, asking if she can call him. He replies 'do what you want'

Sophie

Hi Jonah

Jonah

What do you want?

Sophie

You were right, I’m really rubbish at the maths lessons. I’m doing so bad it's embarrasing

Jonah

Well that’s what you deserve

Sophie

You’re right I know but I’m going to ask you something

Jonah

What?

Sophie

Will you help me? Will you teach me so that I can do alright

Jonah

I really shouldn’t

Sophie

I know but we’re friends and remember that time I saved you from detention when you didn't do your homework by claiming that I spilt my drink all over it and all the ink ran & ruined it. 

Jonah

Yeah I remember. I did appreciate that.
Ok, I will. Let's try. Every Wednesday after school?

Sophie

Yes please

Scene 8: The lessons start Seb and Ella required - Prop - Maths books - different clothes

So they start doing this tutoring every Wednesday.
We will film a number of scenes with them wearing different clothes to denote them working together week after week. We will have them chatting, laughting and getting on really well together. This will all be done to music so we won't hear them talking.

Scene 9. Sophie doing well in class Bouverie has a study style room we can use.  we can have a few extras.  cast - james, talia, ella & extra's

In this scene we have the maths teacher asking a question after he's put something up on the board

7 x 9 - 6 ÷ 3 =

Mr White

Right class. Can anyone solve this sum.

Two people have their hands up. 

Mr White

Emily?

Emily

Nope. Sophie

Sophie

Mr White

Correct. Sophie. I don't know what's changed recently but you're doing so well.

Sophie

Thanks sir. I don't know. All I know is that I'm working really hard to get better.

Mr White

Well just keep on doing what you're doing Sophie cause whatever it is, it's working brilliantly.
Now onto the next task

Scene 10. Parents evening  Cast - James, Ella, Seb, Hannah, Roma. Meeting room's are great.

The scene starts with Sophie and her mum sat with her teacher, and waiting just outside the room is Jonah and his mum

Mr White

Sophie, all I can say is praise. You are doing so well. Since getting into top group you have gone from strength to strength.

Both Sophie and her mum have got broad smiles. But outside the room there's a different story. There is a whispering conversation taking place.

Jonah's mum

Jonah. How come you're not in the top group with Sophie

Jonah

But I'm the one that's been teaching Sophie. She's doing so well because of me teaching her

Jonah's mum

Oh really, if that's true how come she's doing much better than you? 

Jonah get's really angry and raises his voice. Unfortunatly now everyone hears.

Jonah

Do you know how she got into that top group mum? 

Jonah's mum

No Jonah. How about you tell me.

Jonah

Cause she cheated in the exam mum. That's how.

Back in the classroom they all look shocked except for Sophie who now looks devastated

Sophies mum

Is that true Sophie?

Sophie replies nervously

Sophie

But, but I've been doing so well. You know this mum, you heard what Mr White said

Sophies mum now gets angry

Sophies mum

That is not what I asked Sophie. Did you cheat in your exam or didn't you?

There's a pause

Sophie

Yes. I did.

Mr White

Oh Dear. I'm struggling to know what to say Sophie. On the one hand you are doing so well at the moment and that I know is not due to cheating. But on the other hand, you cheating in an exam can not go unpunished. I will need to speak to the headteacher.

Sophie

I understand Sir

As Sophie and her mum leave the class room and walk past Jonah and his mum, Sophie looks back and it's so apparent how angry she is with what he's just done. Jonah looks so guilty. He realises he has just ruined their friendship. Maybe for good.

 

Scene 11. The second falling out  Ella needed, her mum calling and she'll be reading book

We have a scene where Sophie is in her bedroom. Her phone goes and we see Jonah's name come up and she declines the call.

Then on another day she's in her room and her mum shouts out...

Sophies Mum

Sophie, there's Jonah at the front door. He wants to see you.

Sophie

Tell him I'm not interested

Sophies Mum

But Sophie

 

Sophie

Mum I'm not interested.

The phone goes again and again she declines. We could have this repeating a number of times.

 

Scene 12. Sophie's dropped books Ella & seb needed. can be filmed anywhere but we need books and we need a poster.

 

This will be similar to the first falling out, again many scenes where they come across each other.

One day they're walking towards each other in the corridor. Sophie is holding some books which she accidently drops on the floor. Jonah gets down to help her.

Sophie

I don't need any help from you, thank you very much.

She picks up her books and walks off and we see Jonah standing there so disappointed and sad.

He then looks up and notices a poster inviting people to audition for a new musical called 'Once Upon a Friend'. 
With a strapline 'You were a friend but is this the end?'
Auditions this Monday
Jonah takes out his phone and photographs the poster. This is enough for the audience to know that he's interested in auditioning.

 

Scene 13. The auditions.  Ella, seb, frank, talia, theo, Tana, Pianist . Possibly do at Whitehouse

Jonah turns up with his friends for the auditions and when he get's there he sees that in amongst others there is Sophie and her friends.

Mr Pillicanarro

Thank you for coming today. This is a wonderful turnout. As you know we are looking for you to audition for many roles, in particular the two lead roles of Victoria and Hector. I hope you've all chosen who you're going to audition for though as you know you can audition for two roles.

Right, let the auditions begin.

We see a lot audition taking place, some very good, some terrible and hilarious. 

Then we see Jonah Audition. He's very good and we see Sophies face in the audience. Emily turns to her and says

Emily

Flipping eck. Sophie, did you know he was that good? 

Sophie

He's alright I suppose.

She folds her arms and turns away.

Emily

You wish he wasn't auditioning don't you?

Sophie

Of course. I can't stand the guy. I'm thinking of pulling out of the auditions.

Emily

Are you out of your mind. You've wanted this for so long.

Sophie gets up and walks out.

Mr Pillicanarro

Right, who do we have next. It's Sophie. Sophie can you come up please.

Emily

Errrrr, Sir, she gone to the bathroom.

Mr Pillicanarro

Ok, could you please go and get her Emily we're running out of time.

Emily runs after Sophie and catches up with her

Emily

Sophie you're being called

Sophie

If Jonah's in, then I'm out. It's that simple.

Emily

Sophie this role is so perfect for you and your talent. 

Sophie

I can't do this Emily

Emily

Well, if you ask me you're being pathetic. And you know, if a friend is pathetic then I'm out.

Emily walks away and heads back to the audition room

Emily

Sorry Sir, Sophie has decided not to audition

Mr Pillicanarro

Oh, that's a shame but no matter. Okay we're done today. We'll let you know by Tuesday who's got what role.

They all start leaving. Emily is walking away when Sophie walks in.

Sophie

I don't want to lose you as a friend Emily.
Sir, sorry I got delayed. Can I still audition please?

Mr Pillicanarro

I really shouldn't.
Oh what the heck come on. Let's be quick. 

Scene 14. Second auditions

 

Sophie's at the make up mirror all lit up while preparing her make up. Emily is with her.

Emily

So are you happy that you've been called back for a second audition?

Sophie

I suppose so.

Emily

Sophie. So few people have. You've been chosen, you should be so happy.

Sophie shrugs

Emily

It's still about Jonah isn't it.

Sophie nods.

Sophie

I fear that they will get us to act together and Emily I won't be able to cope with that.

We see Jonah with Sam and Thomas

Thomas

Jonah. You'll never guess. We've got hold of the draft cast list and script. Guess what role you've got?

Jonah

Who?

Sam

Hector. You're playing opposite Sophie.

Thomas

How happy are you?

Jonah

I'd be very happy. But you know what will happen if I get that role.

Sam & Thomas

What?

Jonah

Sophie will walk out. So before she does. I'm pulling out.

Jonah walks out and goes outside and he's walking away. Sam and Thomas are left looking at each other.

Sam

We can't let him walk out on this.

Thomas

How are we going to convince him?

Sam

Knowing Jonah. I don't think we have a chance

Thomas rubs his chin.

Thomas

I've got an idea. It's a long shot but it's worth a try follow me.

We see them run out after Jonah

We're back with the girls

Emily

Have you been asked to learn a song

Sophie

Yes. It's called...

Mr Pillicanarro

Sophie you're needed for the audition now please

Sophie

ok

Emily

Sophie. Smash it.

They go to the audition room

Mr Pillicanarro

Sophie could you head to the middle for me please.

Sophie does

Mr Pillicanarro

Right, Sophie. You were very impressive which is why I've asked you back for a second audition for the lead role of Victoria.

Sophie

Thank you Mr Pillicanarro. I'll try my best.

Mr Pillicanarro

Ok, so I need you to sing the song Did you mean what you said? Have you learned it?

Sophie

I have. But it's a duet.

Mr Pillicanarro

I know.

He turns round and calls out

Mr Pillicanarro

Jonah could you please come to the stage.

Jonah goes onto the stage and stands next to Sophie but they're both refusing to look at each other. Mr Pillicanarro turns to the pianist.

Mr Pillicanarro

Peter could you play the song please.

Peter begins to play. Mr Pillicanarro isn't interrupting but we see his annoyance that they are not looking at each other but he says nothing. But things change as they sing and use the song as a vehicle to express their anger with each other especially Sophie. And as they do that they start looking at each other, they start aiming this anger at each other as a form of therapy. We see Mr Pillicanarro's face as he sees this happend and is impressed at their passion but doesn't understand what's going on. By the end they look at each other and then embrace.

Mr Pillicanarro

No no guys, that was brilliant but that's not what happens at the end.

Sophie and Jonah

Yes it is

And they walk away. together smiling and leaving a very puzzled Mr Pillicanarro scratching his head
